Our former president Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam said, “Dream, dream, dream until your dreams come true”. But recently, people have gone insane about the dream catcher trend that’s quite famous right now. From cars to walls, dream catchers are just everywhere and it’s a great hit among youngsters. So those of you who are scratching your head as to what this dream catcher trend is, here is it!
So what’s a dream catcher?
Originally created by Native Americans, dream catchers come in a variety of sizes and styles. They usually consist of a small wooden hoop covered in a net or web of natural fibers, with meaningful sacred items like feathers and beads attached, hanging down from the bottom of the hoop. Real traditional dream catchers are handmade and crafted only from all natural materials, measuring just a few small inches across in size.
Dream catcher and Ojibwe people’s belief
Dream catchers originated with the Ojibwa people and were gradually adopted by some neighboring nations through intermarriage and trade.
An Ojibwa legend recounted by American ethnographer Frances Densmore says the dream catcher originates with Spider Woman, known as Asibikaashi. she took care of the children and the people on the land. As the Ojibwa Nation spread to the corners of North America it became difficult for Asibikaashi to reach all the children. So the mothers and grandmothers would weave magical webs for the children, using willow hoops and sinew, or cordage made from plants. Even infants were provided with protective charm.
A positive symbol
Dream catcher was tied on the cradle of infants to protect them from nightmares. Similarly, dream catchers are now days said to bring good luck and positive vibes. These colorful hangings are made out of colorful feathers and wool that it attracts every onlooker. I’m not really sure if it’s going to bring you good luck, but it definitely brings in a good feeling when you have a look at it. So guys, why not a dream catcher at your home too?
