Have you ever notice why you start to panic during last moment of examination or you feel your heart is pumping fast if you to speak on stage or feel butterfly in your stomach? Well, many of us give such behaviour the name of nervousness. But what about the fear or stress you while doing nothing? You still feel something bad will happen or nothing is going to happen well. Is this also a nervousness?
No, this is state of anxiety which often enable a person to build up the confidence.
Anxiety is a kind of emotion which occur due to an unpleasant state of inner turmoil.
There is a difference between the normal feeling of anxiety and the anxiety syndrome. Fear is an appropriate cognitive and emotional response to a perceived threat while anxiety is fear or fight response for defensive purpose.
In some cases, anxiety is necessary as it acts as an alarm for certain dangers. These alarms include raised heartbeat, sweating, and increased sensitivity to surroundings.
Anxiety disorders are basically of six types:
1) Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
It basically includes excessive worrying about the non-specific events. Generally, people with such disorder do not know about the reason of their worries and overthinking.
2) Panic disorder
Panic disorders usually occur after frightening experiences or prolonged stress but can also occur without a trigger. It includes shaking, confusion, dizziness, nausea, and breathing difficulties.
It is an irrational fear about a place, animals or things. A phobic person knows that his fear is irrational but still feels anxious.
4) Social anxiety disorder
It is the anxiety of being negatively judged by the society.
5) Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
This is an anxiety disorder characterized by thoughts or actions that are repetitive, distressing, and intrusive. People with OCD may obsessively clean personal items or hands or constantly check locks, stoves, or light switches.
6) Separation anxiety disorder
This is characterized by high levels of anxiety when separated from a person or place that provides feelings of security or safety.
Different symptoms of anxiety include:
- neurological, as a headache, paresthesias, vertigo, or presyncope.
- Digestive, as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, dry mouth, or bolus.
- Respiratory, as shortness of breath or sighing breathing.
- Cardiac, as palpitations, tachycardia, or chest pain.
- Muscular, as fatigue, tremors, or tetany.
- Cutaneous, as perspiration, or itchy skin.
- Uro-genital, as frequent urination, urinary urgency, dyspareunia, or impotence
Though it is not 100% curable still there are several treatment options including therapies and counselling which could help the person to cope up with anxiety up to some extent.
Talking or sharing the thoughts with the person is the remedy for curing of mental stress. It helps the patient to develop several strategies to cope up with the situations.
It helps the patient to regulate their emotions, manage stress, understand patterns in behavior that affect their interpersonal relationships. It includes several therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Besides these therapies, medicines are also given in conjugation with it. Several medicines like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are the primary class of antidepressant used to treat anxiety.
Other drugs include Buspirone, Benzodiazepines, Beta Blockers which helps to treat anxiety as well as epilepsy.
Anxiety is nothing but it’s the way how you perceive the situation and cope up with it. Try to overcome your anxiety and boost your confidence. There is nothing in this world which could hamper your dreams if you have the strong willpower and self-confidence.
